Year in Review, Sort of

This one is without the survey.

School:
I defended my thesis on April 3, and it was accepted immediately with no revision suggestions to speak of. That thrilled me. I graduated with my MFA in creative writing with an emphasis in poetry in May. My family came to my graduation. I started teaching as an adjunct professor in August and am still at that now. I taught my first Intermediate Poetry Writing class last semester. Next semester, I have all poetry classes, a mix of intermediate and introduction.

Family:
My family has been basically in good health this year as a whole. My grandmother (dad's mom) has recovered from her mental breakdown and is now doing fairly well. My other grandmother had a pacemaker put in at the beginning of the month. She seems to be recovering well. My cousin went to court and won completely. The school was discriminating against him and not meeting his needs and both situations will be recitified before he goes back to school in January. My sister had a good year, getting a lead in her school play and getting to do summer theater in a place that is completely awesome. My parents are still about the same, although they have come around some more on the issue of me being gay. We had words on Christmas Eve, which was unpleasant, but what can you do. As my sister said, it needed to be said. So.

Relationships:
My relationship with my fiance ended last November, and we haven't really spoken since January. The last time we exchanged email was April. While I never thought I would say this, it has been a blessing. I did a whole heck of a lot of dating this past year, and I feel like I know what works for me now and what definitely doesn't. I have many outrageous stories from this period in my life. I didn't meet anyone who worked for me until October. I am currently waiting for someone who is truly wonderful. I can't say enough good things about her. She's fabulous and special.

Friendships:
I have made some new ones this year, the best of which are Tishie and Lori. Tishie is my new pesto buddy, and I might actually get to meet Lori the week after next. I'm looking forward to it.

Feats:
I climbed a mountain in the Santa Rosas in September. I also hauled my behind up a couple of other steep climbs. It was definitely an experience. I also helped remodel a bathroom, went camping, and learned that I don't completely hate dogs. All of those things I learned from WW. I discovered several new authors and musicians, mostly thanks to Bella and my sister. I learned what my Achilles' heal is, and I have worked to keep it in check. I joined a gym. I started to plan a trip to Ireland that I'm still hoping to take this summer. I also picked out my dream machine, computer-wise, though I haven't bought it, and found a new doctor. I also discovered that I really like Fat Tire and Heffeweisen. Before this year, I wasn't a beer drinker at all. I only drank red wine. I also went to an opera, a play at a Shakespeare festival, and lots of contemporary shows. It's really been a very good year.

Things I Learned:
I learned that I need to stand up for myself, and I regret not standing up for myself when I clearly should have. This happened a couple of times. I also learned that despite people's very good intentions, it is my life, and I have to make my own decisions, regardless of how persistent they are in trying to make me do things their way.

Fabulous!

I'm teaching summer school this summer! Poetry! I'm so happy about this. I'm already planning the class :) On top of just being incredibly fun and wonderful, do you know how many fewer health surveys this means? What a fun way to spend the summer. Or at least part of it. Maybe I'll make a day of it. Get up, go for a run, teach poetry, eat lunch, write, do my lesson plans and grading, fix dinner for Bella. Sounds fabulous indeed.

freak out, most likely, although I like to think that I would befriend the other people in the elevator and do something cool, like pass out cookies...

My relationship was on the rocks, and I was planning to get engaged despite my reservations. Plus I had an English 101 class that seemed to be mocking me all the time. I had a meltdown and got medicated. Best thing I ever did.

Emily Is Violet

I've been feeling really miserable the last couple of days. I'm not sure why. I've been somewhere between climbing the walls and crying my eyes out. It sucks. I wish it would stop. At any rate, I got a few sweet cards from Bella today. That made my day. The thing that really touched me, though, was the fact that she sent my family a really nice card. And that she included Judy on it as part of the family. I loved that. My family loved that. My ex would never, ever have done that (the nice card). She was very vocal about hating my family. It made it horrible to be trapped between loving both and wanting to love both and not feeling like it was okay to love both. So it meant a lot to me that Bella sent them a card.

Interesting

INFP - the Healer
You scored 18% I to E, 21% N to S, 4% F to T, and 68% J to P!
You are more introverted than extroverted. You are more intuitive than observant, you are more feeling based than thinking based, and you prefer to go with the flow rather than having a plan. Your type can best be summarized by the word "Healer", which belongs to the larger group of idealists. You have a capacity for caring that is deeper than most. You strive for unity, are fascinated by the battles between good and evil, and can be something of an idealist. Only 1% of the population shares your type.
As a romantic partner, you are usually supprtive and nuturing, however, you have a high need for individuality. Harmony is extremely important to you as you are very affected by conflict and tension, which also makes you resist confronting your partner directly about problems. When you get angry, you usually blame yourself, rather than your partner. You can also be stubborn and unyielding when you feel you are being criticized or mistreated. You feel the most appreciated when your partner listens to you carefully. You need to be understood. You need to hear your partner express their feelings, the more often, the better. Your group summary: idealists (NF)
Your type summary: INFP

Merry Christmas!

I had a very sweet Christmas today with Bella and her friend. Bella made wonderful food--pasta with veggies and chicken and a very good trifle-like dessert with strawberries. I was her cooking assistant, but I could never make anything as wonderful as what she does. She's a great cook.

Then we exchanged gifts. She gave me books and incense :) And an Indigo Girls CD :) One of the books was especially sweet. It was Amy Tan's new book, Saving Fish from Drowning. The reason it was such a special gift was because one of the first things we did together was go to Amy Tan's reading. It meant a lot that she remembered that, too. It was sweet.

Then we watched the end of the rerun of the Suns-Nets game. I must admit that I had never watched a professional basketball game, although I went to all of the home games at my high school and at my college. It was kind of fun to watch Bella get so excited about the game. It was neat to become aquainted with the sport, as well. Steve Nash is cool to watch.

All in all, it was a very nice day, and I'm very glad that I got to spend it with the sweetest person I know, the fabulous Bella.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

From Bella :)

GEORGE W. BUSH

We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road or not. The chicken is either with us or it is against us. There is no middle ground here.

AL GORE

I invented the chicken. I invented the road. Therefore, the chicken crossing the road represented the application of these two different functions of government in a new, reinvented way designed to bring greater services to the American people.

BILL CLINTON

I did not cross the road with THAT chicken. What do you mean by chicken? Could you define chicken, please?

RALPH NADER

The chicken's habitat on the original side of the road had been polluted by unchecked industrialist greed. The chicken did not reach the unspoiled habitat on the other side of the road because it was crushed by the wheels of a gas-guzzling SUV.

PAT BUCHANAN

To steal a job from a decent, hardworking American.

RUSH LIMBAUGH

I don't know why the chicken crossed the road, but I'll bet it was getting a government grant to cross the road, and I'll bet someone out there is already forming a support group to help chickens with crossing-the-road syndrome. How much more of this can real Americans take? Chickens crossing the road paid for by their tax dollars, and when I say tax dollars, I'm talking about your money, money the government took from you to build roads for chickens to cross.

MARTHA STEWART

No one called to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the farmer's market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No little bird gave me any insider information.

JERRY FALWELL

Because the chicken was gay! Isn't it obvious? Can't you people see the plain truth in front of your face? The chicken was going to the "other side." That's what they call it -- the other side. Yes, my friends, that chicken is gay. And, if you eat that chicken, you will become gay too. I say we boycott all chickens until we sort out this abomination that the liberal media whitewashes with seemingly harmless phrases like "the other side."

DR. SEUSS

Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed, I've not been told!

ERNEST HEMINGWAY

To die. In the rain. Alone.

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

I envision a world where all chickens will be free to cross roads without having their motives called into question.

GRANDPA

In my day, we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Someone told us that the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough for us.

BARBARA WALTERS

Isn't that interesting? In a few moments we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heartwarming story of how it experienced a serious case of molting and went on to accomplish its life-long dream of crossing the road.

JOHN LENNON

Imagine all the chickens crossing roads in peace.

ARISTOTLE

It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

KARL MARX

It was a historical inevitability.

SADDAM HUSSEIN

This was an unprovoked act of rebellion and we were quite justified in dropping 50 tons of nerve gas on it.

RONALD REAGAN

What chicken?

CAPTAIN KIRK

To boldly go where no chicken has gone before.

FOX MULDER

You saw it cross the road with your own eyes! How many more chickens have to cross before you believe it?

SIGMUND FREUD

The fact that you are at all concerned that the chicken crossed the road reveals your underlying sexual insecurity.

BILL GATES

I have just released eChicken 2003, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your checkbook - and Internet Explorer is an inextricable part of eChicken.

ALBERT EINSTEIN

Did the chicken really cross the road or did the road move beneath the chicken?

JOHNNY COCHRAN

Because the road was black and the chicken was white. We must acquit.

THE BIBLE

And God came down from the heavens, and He said unto the chicken, "Thou shalt cross the road." And the chicken crossed the road, and there was much rejoicing.

COLONEL SANDERS

I missed one.

Ever given someone a Full-Body oil massage?
yes

Current disappointment:
that my house is a mess. I'm just not quite sure where to start to get it unmessy.
