Student

A couple years ago, in my second semester of teaching, I had a student write a paper about being molested as a child. It was a very difficult paper to read, and it was obvious that he was just beginning to come to terms with what had happened to him (I think he was 27 at the time). I always meet with my students one on one after the first essay and so I had to talk to this student about his essay. I really wasn't sure what to say, to be honest, but I had a couple of counseling center phone numbers to give to him. Well, he used those numbers and got the help he needed. I had him in my poetry class again last year, and he was doing wonderfully. Today he sent me a link to a podcast interview that he did about what happened to him as a child and how far he has come since he started going to therapy in the middle of his first semester of college. I don't think I have ever been so proud of a student. I'm not posting the links here, mostly because they reveal location, but I will certainly pass them on to anyone who is interested.

Mountain Biking, Take Two

I did really well this time (this was last night, by the way). WW and I rode for about three hours. We wore her dog out completely, almost to the point where we had to carry her back to the car (two bikes and a big dog, hmmm). Her dog joins us on most of our outings. I love her dog, and I have to admit, I am not a dog person. I went running with her (WW) this evening. I hadn't been running in quite a while. I did okay, though, I must say. I may even join her again next week. We're going (we hope) star gazing tomorrow night at a big observatory not too far from here. We went just over a month ago and camped at this place (which was totally awesome), but it was too cloudy to see the stars. It looks right now like it should be clear tomorrow night. We hope so anyway. We're planning some big camping trips for this fall. I am so incredibly excited about them. I am trying to plan one as we speak.

School started this week, as well. I am absolutely exhausted, which may be evidenced by the lack of coherence of this post, I don't know. I have four classes and 89 students, which, let me tell you, is a lot of grading. It's going fine so far, though.

Movie Recommendation

I just got done seeing Lady in the Water for the second time, and I cannot recommend it more highly. It's one of the best movies I have ever seen. It's advertised as being very scary, but it's not at all. I have a lot of issues with how it was advertised, in fact. But anyway, it's a very gentle story, like a bedtime story. It's kind of hard to explain because it is such a unique movie. I have never seen anything even remotely like it to compare it to. It's great, though. Go see it!
